Evaluation of Health Resilience Indicators Against the COVID‑19 Pandemic in Urban Neighborhoods (Case Study: Selected Neighborhoods of Tabriz City)

Introduction  
 The coronavirus pandemic represented one of the most profound global health crises of the twenty‑first century, confronting humanity with an array of complex challenges that endangered not only physical wellbeing but also psychological and spatial aspects of life. As societies struggled to cope with isolation, uncertainty, and changing urban dynamics, neighborhoods emerged as the fundamental units of resilience and adaptation. In urban studies, the neighborhood is often regarded as the turning point in thinking about the city—a microcosm that reflects larger social, spatial, and environmental processes. During the pandemic, this scale of study became even more critical, since the ability of each neighborhood to sustain healthy living directly influenced the overall urban response to the crisis. Consequently, the neighborhood was selected as the principal analytical scale for this research. The study pursues two major objectives. The first is to define and explain the biological health paradigm of the neighborhood within the post‑corona context, where health is interpreted not merely as the absence of disease but as a multidimensional condition grounded in daily life, community structure, and spatial organization. The second objective is to interpret and measure the resilience of biological health in selected neighborhoods of Tabriz during the pandemic, identifying how each locality absorbed, adapted to, and recovered from the shocks of the crisis. These dual aims acknowledge that neighborhood health is both a state to be described and a dynamic process to be understood.
 
Mothodology
To fulfill these goals, an extensive body of literature was examined. The research incorporated 182 scholarly articles, each addressing how pandemics interact with urban morphology, social networks, accessibility to health services, and local governance. Through careful synthesis, 12 key indicators and 20 measurable variables were extracted. These metrics formed a coherent framework built upon the innovative classification principle termed “the evolution of health.” Within this perspective, human health is analyzed through three complementary dimensions—spatial (place‑based), psychological (spirit‑based), and medical (clinical or physical). The integration of these three layers generates what the research conceptualizes as a biological health paradigm—an interpretative model allowing researchers to understand the vitality and resilience of urban neighborhoods under stress conditions such as the pandemic. The paradigm was operationalized as an analytical tool within the research design. Through confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), the study tested the relationships among the extracted indicators and validated whether the proposed dimensions accurately explained variations in neighborhood health resilience. The geographic scope of the analysis focused on three representative neighborhoods in the city of Tabriz—Gharamalek, Maghsudieh, and Valie‑Asr Town. These neighborhoods were intentionally selected based on official mortality and infection data released by the Ministry of Health, Treatment, and Medical Education of Iran, which categorized them respectively into high‑risk, medium‑risk, and low‑risk levels of exposure and vulnerability. This stratified selection ensured that the comparative analysis captured the diversity of urban experiences across different social and spatial contexts. Methodologically, the research embraced a mixed‑methods approach, integrating quantitative and qualitative techniques to achieve a more comprehensive understanding of urban health resilience. On the quantitative side, Geographic Information Systems (GIS) were utilized to spatially analyze density patterns, accessibility to public services, green spaces, and transportation networks—factors known to influence the capacity of residents to maintain safe mobility and social distance. In parallel, socio‑behavioral data were collected through structured questionnaires and interviews, allowing the study to probe subjective perceptions of safety, neighborhood solidarity, and psychological wellbeing. Qualitative components such as narrative inquiry complemented statistical modeling by capturing the lived experiences of residents during lockdown conditions. The integration of these data streams was achieved through advanced analytics using SPSS software for statistical processing and AMOS version 19 for structural equation modeling (SEM). SEM was particularly effective in testing the interdependencies between spatial organization, social cohesion, and health outcomes within the predefined conceptual model.
 
Findings
The findings reveal notable differences among the neighborhoods studied. The analysis demonstrated that Maghsudieh exhibited the highest degree of resilience, both in terms of physical health indicators and collective adaptability. This was followed by Gharamalek, which, despite higher initial vulnerability, displayed strong communal support networks that mitigated long‑term impacts. Valie‑Asr Town, categorized as low‑risk, maintained relatively favorable conditions but with less pronounced community interaction, suggesting that physical health advantages alone did not guarantee overall resilience. Taken together, these results indicate that resilience is a multifaceted phenomenon shaped by the interplay of spatial arrangements, local governance, and social ties rather than by sanitary infrastructure alone. Interestingly, the outcomes called into question the validity of the initial hypothesis which stated that “the more favorable the neighborhood’s biological qualities, the lower its rate of corona infection.” Empirical results suggest that the correlation between spatial quality and disease spread is not straightforward. For instance, neighborhoods with well‑developed infrastructure sometimes exhibited higher rates of infection due to greater mobility and social interaction among residents. Conversely, certain densely populated yet socially cohesive neighborhoods demonstrated remarkable capacity for adaptation and collective health protection.
 This contradiction opens a new dimension in urban health research, emphasizing that resilience cannot be understood merely through physical indicators, but must incorporate cultural, behavioral, and institutional variables. The implications of this research extend beyond the immediate context of Tabriz. By developing and applying the biological health paradigm, the study provides a methodological foundation for evaluating urban resilience in the post‑pandemic era. The proposed model encourages city planners and public health officials to consider neighborhoods not as passive spatial units, but as active living systems capable of evolving through crisis. The combination of spatial, psychological, and medical dimensions offers a holistic lens for redefining sustainable urban living. It underscores the necessity for urban design strategies that promote inclusivity, accessibility, mental wellbeing, and local self‑sufficiency.
Furthermore, the comparative discussion with previous studies underlined the originality and relevance of the adopted indicators. It confirmed that while international literature often isolates physical factors—such as density or land use—the triadic integration of place, spirit, and medicine better reflects the real texture of urban health. Such a synthesis resonates with global movements toward “healthy cities” and “resilient communities,” aligning the local findings of Tabriz with contemporary international discourses.
 
Discussion and Conclusion
In conclusion, the research not only examined the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on neighborhood health but also contributed to the conceptual evolution of how urban resilience is understood. By linking quantitative rigor with qualitative depth, it established a framework for assessing neighborhood vitality amid global crises. The ultimate message of the study is that the post‑corona neighborhood should be seen as a balanced organism—where integrated health, spatial solidarity, and adaptive capacity collectively define a sustainable way of living in future cities.
