Abstract
The convergence of global urbanization and population ageing represents one of the most significant demographic transformations of the twenty-first century, necessitating urban designs that promote health and physical activity among older adults. This applied study, using a descriptive–survey methodology, examines the impact of age-friendly city components on the level of physical activity among adults aged 65 years and older in the city of Tabriz. Data were collected from 250 older adults using the standardized Age-Friendly Cities and Communities Questionnaire (AFCCQ) and the Physical Activity Scale for the Elderly (PASE), and analyzed through Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM) using SmartPLS 3 software. The results indicate that eight out of the nine domains of an age-friendly city have a significant effect on older adults’ physical activity. Open spaces and buildings, social participation, transportation, and social respect and inclusion exhibited the strongest effects. Financial status, civic participation, communication and information, and community support and health services also demonstrated significant but moderate effects, while housing did not show a significant impact. The findings emphasize that enhancing physical activity among older adults requires an integrated approach that combines physical infrastructure with opportunities for social participation, access to appropriate transportation, and the promotion of a culture of respect for older people. This study provides a foundation for prioritizing urban interventions aimed at improving the health and well-being of the elderly population.
